Annualized simplified liability, not employer W-4 withholding. Federal pretax deductions here do not reduce the modelled Social Security/Medicare wage base. Not tax advice.
How to calculate an estimated 2026 federal income tax
- Start with anticipated annual employee wages and choose a federal filing status.
- Enter eligible annual federal pretax adjustments, if you know them. Do not subtract the standard deduction again: the calculation already applies an estimated 2026 standard deduction.
- Read the calculated federal taxable income and federal liability separately from payroll taxes (Social Security and Medicare).
- Check whether the chosen state has a wage income tax. If state rules are not implemented, the displayed amount explicitly excludes state income tax.
- Use the result to understand a simplified estimate, not to file a return, predict a refund or determine exact paycheck withholding.
Worked example: $60,000 annual wages, single filer
Under the tool's simplified 2026 assumptions, $60,000 of annual wages with no additional federal pretax adjustments gives about $43,900 federal taxable income after the $16,100 standard deduction. The estimated federal income tax is $5,020 and employee Social Security plus basic Medicare is $4,590. The result after those listed federal taxes is approximately $50,390 per year. This is not a guaranteed net paycheck.
For Wyoming, there is no broad-based individual state income tax on employee wages. This does not mean there are no other state or local payroll deductions, benefit deductions or taxes.
Questions people ask about this calculator
Why is federal taxable income lower than gross pay?
The model subtracts the indicated eligible annual federal pretax adjustment and a standard deduction appropriate to your filing status before applying marginal brackets.
Are refundable credits and dependent credits included?
No. The calculator does not compute tax credits, itemized deductions, self-employment income, investment income or family-specific adjustments.
Is my federal income tax equal to my paycheck withholding?
Not necessarily. Withholding is an employer payroll process and depends on Form W-4 and payment patterns. Estimated annual liability differs from withheld amounts.
What if I work in a different state from where I live?
Residence, work location and reciprocity rules can affect withholding and state liability. This calculator cannot resolve cross-state tax obligations. Consult the relevant state tax authority before making payroll decisions.
Are these figures official tax or legal advice?
No. These simplified figures are educational estimates using published 2026 federal parameters. For withholding, check the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator and review your own circumstances with a qualified tax professional when needed.
